Radley Private School’s chess champion

Local learner invited by Johannesburg North District Sport to participate in the Provincial Chess Champions.

A learner from Radley Private School reigned as the Johannesburg District Chess Competition champion held on June 11.

During the D10 Johannesburg District Chess Competition, Ofana Tema won in all five games that he competed.

After ranking first in the U11 boys’ division of the competition, Ofana was invited to compete at the Chess Winter Games in the Provincial Chess Championships held at the Gauteng North Wrestling Hall in Pretoria on June 18, where he represented the district.

The Winter Chess Games saw over 100 learners ready to compete. Ofana made it through to the top seven after winning four out of five of his games. He fell one point short of the winner.

Ofana joyfully shared, “I thoroughly enjoy competing in chess competitions. I was not nervous because I am so used to competing. I was excited and enjoyed the experience. The best moment for me was going head-to-head in the last round fighting for first place. Unfortunately, I lost by only one point.”

The principal of Radley Private School, Charne’ De Gouveia, congratulated Ofana on his magnificent achievement. “His confidence and entrepreneurial characteristics, like grit and perseverance, were truly evident throughout this competition. We are extremely proud of Ofana.”
