Firefighters visit Panda Pen Nursery School

Youngsters line up to touch the fire hose and other firefighting gear as firefighters teach them how to stay safe.

Excited chattering and gleeful shouts welcomed firefighters as they paid a visit to Panda Pen Nursery School for a talk and demonstration about fire safety.

The youngsters watched attentively as Natasha and Kyle Edwards and Jono Martin from Community Group Firefighters Association told them what to do when they see a fire, and how to use some of their equipment, at the Boskruin nursery school on June 22.

The Jaws of Life, fire hose, axe, oxygen tanks and other gear for breaking doors and saving lives were objects of interest.

At the end of the talk, all the children lined up to have a chance to touch some of the gear.

This event was organised by Tina Jewan, whose daughter Khyra Parag (6) chose to give a speech required by the nursery school, about fire safety.

But even the youngster was unaware the firefighters were to attend, and she was as excited as all the other children when they walked outside to see the firefighting vehicles in the parking lot.

“Fire safety is very important at any school, we regularly have all the children practise an evacuation plan,” said principal Caressa du Toit.

“This teaches the children how to leave the school calmly if there was ever a fire on the property. As our theme this week is fire, we had the firefighters visit… They reinforced what we teach about dangerous items in our homes, how to be safe and what to do if there is ever a fire. They provided a home fire escape plan for each family too.”
