Cable thief sentenced to 20 years

The conviction and sentencing came quickly, police say.

Honeydew police are celebrating the conviction of a man for cable theft.

Spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said the man was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment in Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, and cases like such as this were being expedited in courts to prevent a backlog.

“He was sentenced for 20 years for interfering with, and damage to infrastructure,” Muthan said.

“The conviction came very quickly. For these cases it can be water infrastructure, substations, and more but we most often see it is cable theft.”

He urged the public to not resort to these crimes that may seem harmless but affect the community and costs taxpayers plenty of money.

Furthermore, if people are aware of cable theft and similar crimes, they can contact their nearest police station.
