Police arrest two men suspected of shooting and killing pastor

The Cosmo City pastor was shot and killed during an armed robbery in which the cellphones and cash of congregants were taken.

Honeydew Police have arrested two men and charged them with murder after a pastor was shot and killed during a robbery at a church in Cosmo City.

Spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said the incident happened on the evening of June 15.

“The complainant was at the church with five other members when two suspects entered and pointed their firearms at them,” Muthan said.

“They demanded their cellphones and cash, which they gave. The pastor then appeared through an open door and the suspects shot him and left with the cellphones and cash.”

One of the suspects was pointed out by the witness during an ID parade and arrested on June 20.

This led to the second arrest when the suspect led police to the accomplice.

“They were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Muthan continued.

Tributes and well-wishes for the church community poured in for the pastor on the Cosmo City News and Updates page.

“He will not be forgotten. He died on duty. The heaven is celebrating his arrival in the presence of the most high God… May his soul rest in peace. Let the Holy Spirit heal the broken hearts in Jesus Christ’s name,” said one member of the group.

Another said, “Good thing is that everyone will leave this world, we are here temporary [sic], one day we will die. Killing someone, it doesn’t mean that you are clever. God sees you, one day it will be you….”
Cosmo City currently has a small satellite police station linked to Honeydew Police Station, but community members have in the past complained it was insufficient to meet the need in the area.

“Police members are working around the clock to fight crime in Cosmo City. Residents must understand that to give the area its own fully-fledged police station will require a lot and it cannot be done overnight.”

The provincial police need to approve this, and there are other areas also in need of their own stations, Muthan explained.
