Dwars Street substation has not had any thefts since it was replaced

Residents were concerned about the security of the substation, but it has not had any incidents since.

A whole substation was replaced after a serious incident of cable theft on Dwars Street, Bromhof.

It was during load-shedding a few weeks back that the substation was raided, and more than 60 homes were without electricity from that evening until the next day.

The new substation has locks on the doors and no other security, though it does stand across the road from a guardhouse that is manned during the day.

The nearest street light has been vandalised and does not work.

Resident Leon Vathian met Randburg Sun on-site a few days after the substation was replaced, and expressed concern that it might be raided again.

But another couple of weeks down the line, Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau said the substation is safe.

“Cable theft is definitely down,” he said.

“Even though we recently had yet another case, [at] Dwars Street I have not had any more complaints lately.”

Questions were sent to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena and his comments will be published when they are made.
