Ann Harding Cheshire Home asks for donations

Local charity asks for help replacing its hijacked bus that was recovered but had to be written off it was so badly damaged.

Ann Haring Cheshire Home is asking for financial assistance.

The residential care facility in Northwold caters to 40 adults who have a physical disability.

Fundraising manager Jackie Kyle said one of the centre’s buses had been written off after a hijacking last year.

The payout from insurance and the Department of Social Development amounted to R756 369 and the facility is entitled to an import duty rebate which, plus input Vat, is R136 777.

“We have looked into options of what we can purchase for this amount, and have come up with the VW Crafter 50 2.0 TDI 103kW, priced at R1 050 373.94 which includes the wheelchair conversion and the hoist,” Kyle said.

“We are short an amount of R79 427.90, plus we feel it would be sensible to take out a service plan which would be in the region of around R10 000. We are, therefore, approximately R90 000 short to purchase this vehicle.”

The centre has been coping with one bus but in recent months since lockdown restrictions eased, residents have been going out more.

The current bus holds a maximum of six wheelchairs at a time and 40 residents.

“There are also times when we have outings where a number of residents want to go, and we are limited to six in wheelchairs,” she added.

“A second bus is therefore vital to our residents, and their freedom and ability to live normal lives. We would very much appreciate any assistance you can give us in trying to raise this R90 000. If you are not able to help, perhaps you could pass this request on. The sooner we are able to purchase this bus, the sooner our residents’ lives will be easier.”
