Man arrested for reporting false robbery

All the items that were reportedly stolen were actually sold, and later recovered.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested for reporting a false robbery.

Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja said the man first appeared at Randburg Magistrate’s Court on May 10.

“It is alleged that on Friday, May 6 at about 13:30, the alleged victim, who is now a suspect, went to a filling station in Ferndale to withdraw money,” Maja said.

“He left his car idling [in] the parking lot. When he came back, he allegedly noticed a guy standing next to his car while another suspect was inside his car.”

The man told police these men had his keys, and while he pleaded with them to take his money but not his vehicle, they drove off.

“The officers conducted initial investigations and followed up on all the leads at their disposal. It was established that the said items in his statement were sold not robbed.”

The man was tracked down and arrested, and all the items were recovered.

“This is the second incident in two weeks… The Station Commander of Randburg SAPS Brigadier Michelle Jones applauded the members for the good work and further reiterated what she said previously, warning people not to lie under oath as that will land them in jail.”
