Sport, music and food bring the community together
ZANDSPRUIT – Non-profit company and donors host community event to combat drugs and crime.
A local non-profit company launched its first drug awareness sports programme with sporting action, music and donations of food.
Ubambolwethu Global Foundation hosted this event at the sports ground opposite Zandspruit near Beyers Naudé Drive on April 30.
Sponsored by Pick n Pay Randridge Mall, and with donations of food for the youngsters participating, the event is the first of many aiming to reduce drug addiction and crime by keeping children busy through sports, art and music lessons, explained founder and executive director Suzan Nyathi.
“We also aim to show the children that there are people who care about their well-being and future,” she said.
“The event will be an introduction for different types of coaching clinics including soccer, rugby, cricket, netball, and also feature an art teacher for art lessons and musical instruments teacher.”
Rugby was the game played at this first event, and former Springbok sevens captain Jonathan Mokuena oversaw things.
Among the guests invited to speak were Martina Magoro from Mperemisha Orphanage, Nomonde Mdakane from the Family Skills Centre and Josiah Nkabinde from Lethukukhanya Health Institute.
Members of Honeydew Police Station also were present.
The next event is scheduled for May 8, with monthly events planned thereafter.
