Pop-up market to raise funds for feral cats

The proceeds from the pop-up market will go to the feral fund to help the cats from Golden Harvest Park.

A pop-up market to raise funds and assist the feral cats in Golden Harvest Park will be held on April 9.

The market will be held at Cheshire Homes Charity Shop in Northwold and all the proceeds will go to a feral fund. Lorraine Tebutt of the shop kindly offered to host the market that will start at 09:00 until 13:00.

Jill van Gemert who takes care of a fully sterilised colony of cats in the park said she had managed to secure many goods in excellent condition, some of them new, to sell at the market in addition to what Tebutt had secured.
Van Gemert said there was another colony in the park and its numbers had catapulted. “We are trying to sterilise as many kitties as possible, however, it is a huge burden to do so on a limited pension,” she said.

“Although we have managed to sterilise a number of the cats, there is one colony in particular where cats have been dumped and because we have not had the funds to sterilise all the cats, the colony is growing at an alarming rate.”
Besides sterilising, they also feed the cats a few days a week. She said the colony they looked after had been fully sterilised, are healthy and periodically given tick and flea treatment. They also provide several 10kg bags of kibbles each month at a cost of between R240 and R300 a bag to other colonies. They also give the cats some tinned food and the funding comes from a few pensioners.

She added they have received a donation of money to sterilise about seven cats and this would be done over the next couple of weeks. “The cats are trapped, sterilised and returned to the colony. Bluebush Vet in Randburg has offered us a charity rate, so our grateful thanks go to them.”
She added there would be glassware, kitchen appliances and utensils, bedlinen, clothing, pictures, books, succulents and a whole host of other items at the market. “We would like to express our grateful thanks to Lorraine and Cheshire for the help and support.”
