NPO assists residents from Kya Sand
Residents from Kya Sand informal settlement are set to benefit from the innovative Community Food Legacy programme.
The Green-In-Action non-profit organisation took its innovative Community Food Legacy programme to Life Tree farm in Kya Sand.
The organisation donated banana trees and sweet potatoes to the farm on March 7.
The garden is entirely operated by residents from the Kya Sand informal settlement who are working on the government’s Community Works Programme (CWP). The organisation’s executive director, Geoffrey Tloubatla, said they have already donated to various communities and schools in Soweto and Wallmansthan in Pretoria north.
“Our Community Food Legacy programme seeks to empower communities to have sustainable food supply,” he said.
He said their organisation does not only donate trees and vegetables but also conducts food recycling and provide food reduction awareness.
“As an Environmental NGO, Green-In-Action focuses on other environmental-related issues such as water and energy efficiency awareness, environmental health awareness and e-mobility,” he said.
He said that they are currently self-funded and are appealing to any kind of sponsorship from corporate and the government to continue assisting more communities and schools. “Public is welcome to send us a motivation, recommending any community and school that diversify our offerings. Potential sponsors or members of the public can contact us.”
