Alchemy bags medals in tang soo do African youth champs

CRESTA – Local martial arts group kicks the year off with medals.

Alchemy Dojang won an impressive two gold medals and a bronze at the Africa Tang Soo Do Youth Championships.

The championships were held to celebrate the development of the newly formed African Tang Soo Do Confederation, and so the tournament saw the martial artists from Cresta compete virtually against counterparts from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Morocco, Ivory Coast and Algeria.

They submitted videos of their forms (katas).

Congratulations to Katherine and Braedon Hollingworth for both taking first place and receiving gold in the U18 black belt girls and U18 black belt boys categories, respectively.

Xander van Heerden also won third place and received a bronze medal in the U9 boys’ open hand forms category.

Alchemy is very proud to congratulate Riordan McLachlan, Dewet Pienaar, Janné van Heerden, Liam Pearson and Exoce Kadiya for their exceptional participation in these championships.

After competing only virtually for almost two years due to the pandemic, Alchemy Dojang and its students are looking forward to a calendar full of events this year, starting with a trip to Nelspruit to compete on March 26, and the long-awaited return of the Arnold Classic Africa in June.

“The formation of the African Confederation is fantastic as it could develop into a continental championship for Tang Soo Do, and we look forward to having normal competitions with sparring matches, weapons and forms all included,” master Gregory Hart said.
