Fit Samaritan runs 294km to raise funds for girl’s school fees

COSMO CITY – On February 12, Seger didn't only run 21.1km in the morning. She also ran the Randburg Harriers 10km Valentine's Race in the afternoon.

More than R135 000 has been raised for a Cosmo City girl’s school fees.

This after fit Samaritan Nickey Seger ran half marathon distances (21.1km) every day for 14 days in a row and organised a fundraising campaign on BackaBuddy. On February 12, Seger didn’t only run 21.1km in the morning, she also ran the Randburg Harriers 10km Valentine’s Race in the afternoon. “I am very proud of what we have achieved, and of course, it was not just me but the team with me,” Seger told Randburg Sun.

“Everyone from the donors to those who shared my campaign on social media, and my boyfriend Grant Clack, who ran every half marathon with me – thank you.” She said learner Nellie Khuzwayo (18) was in need of stationery, a laptop and money for school fees. The BackaBuddy target was R75 600, so the excess funding would go towards the youngster’s tertiary education next year (she wants to study nursing).

While funds are no longer being raised, Seger plans to keep the campaign alive on BackaBuddy and social media to stay transparent to the donors. “In 2005, I met Goodwill [Khuzwayo’s father] while working together at Scuba City in Ferndale. Despite being disabled after a near-fatal taxi accident, I saw huge potential in him and decided to write in for a 94.7 Christmas wish every year for three years until he and his family were chosen,” Seger added.

“As part of the wish, his daughter Nellie’s school fees were paid for one year at a private school in Cosmo City. After a year, Goodwill had no option but to put Nellie back into a government school… [Then] I was horrified to hear that the children in her class were fighting about who was allowed to sell drugs in the Grade 3 class. It was then that I decided to step in and pay for Nellie’s school fees at a private school until she finished Grade 12.”
