BRIXTON – Weeks of uncertainty as to who will lead the City will be answered as the City Council finally takes shape.

[November 22, 15:00]

The first part of the Inaugural City Council Meeting is officially done with the swearing-in of 270 councillors.

These elected representatives can now officially assume their duties and start delivering on promises made during their campaigning.

The council will now shift its attention to electing a speaker of the council, the executive mayor and council whip. There has been a lot of back and forth among political parties surrounding who will ultimately become mayor.

Action SA will nominate former mayor Herman Mashaba for the position while the ANC and DA will nominate Mpho Moerane and Dr Mpho Phalatse, respectively, as their candidates. Coalitions will be the only way a candidate will be successful today and it will be interesting to see how the parties will align now that it is time.
