Owlet is given new home.

LINDEN – A 10-day-old owl receives a new home in Linden nest.

It was ‘operation success’ as a newborn owl was introduced to its new family in Linden.

The spotted eagle owl parents (Harry and Hermoine) and children (Gryffindor and Hufflepuff) welcomed their newest family member, who is yet to be named, after a carefully conducted operation in their nest, which sits up a tree that is video-monitored 24 hours a day, in the Lindsay family garden.

Randpark Ridge-based company, Eco Solutions, which had previously installed the box and the video camera feed, oversaw the introduction of the owlet.

The group also conducted a Facebook Live video of the event.

“The owlet is about 10 days old and it should fit in nicely with the other two because they are roughly the same age,” explained Nicci Wright of the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, which had taken care of the owlet since it had been rescued.

She had brought the owlet in a basket, before Zander van Menen of Eco Solutions climbed the tree, passed a rope down, and lifted the owlet in a bag to the nest.

In doing so, the protective owl father, Harry, dive bombed him a few times and scratched his neck.

But the owlet was placed in the nest successfully and shortly after Van Manen had climbed down from the tree, mommy Hermoine was welcoming the owlet and surrounding it and its new siblings with her feathers.

Sara Orchardson of Eco Solutions thanked the Lindsays for sharing their home with the owls, and allowing them to install the video camera to provide the live feed which can be viewed by the public at any time on YouTube.
