Consider a career at the SPCA

NORTH RIDING – Retiring inspector controller encourages youth to consider a career at the SPCA.

Randburg SPCA’s retiring inspector controller Jean Gaskell has encouraged the community, especially youngsters, to look at a career at the non-profit animal welfare organisation.

The 70-year-old recently retired after 15 years of service at the society’s Randburg branch in North Riding, where she filled a number of roles in her time but finished as inspector controller.

“A career at the SPCA can be very rewarding,” she said. “You have the chance to make a difference in your community. As for the inspector role, you will have to complete exams, and you will need to be very compassionate about animals. I prefer being with animals to people.”

Gaskell said although this is a paid position, one may also need to develop a thicker skin as they inspect properties for their worthiness for adoption, or respond to cases where owners have shown cruelty to the animals.

“Another sad part is people who want to take care of an animal but do not know-how. We do give advice to these people. What is nice is when an animal comes in from a bad situation and we take care of it and find it a loving home.”
