Parties pay their respects to the late executive mayor

JOBURG – Matongo remembered as one that was willing to co-operate across party lines and listen to colleagues with different views.

Political parties pay tribute to mayor of the City.

Political parties in Johannesburg have put their difference aside to wish the now late Mayor of Johannesburg, Jolidee Matongo, a respectful farewell. Matongo tragically passed on after being involved in a motor vehicle accident which has taken the lives of two others while another two remain in hospital. Representatives from the different political parties he worked with in the City have shared their condolences and traits about Matongo that they admired and will miss.

Democratic Alliance City of Johannesburg mayoral candidate Dr Mpho Phalatse expressed, “While we were both representatives of two opposing political parties, Mayor Matongo always treated me with respect as a fellow council colleague, and even during his short tenure as mayor, was willing to take my calls on matters of critical service delivery issues. During committee meetings in Council, Mayor Matongo was always willing to co-operate across party lines and listen to colleagues with different views.”

Former mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba tweeted his shock at the sudden passing of the mayor adding, “My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues in the ANC (African National Congress). Politics must always come last in these moments. He was taken far too soon.”

African Independent Congress leader and Community Development MMC Margaret Arnolds stated, “Councillor Matongo was dedicated and passionate about improving service delivery for Joburg residents. He still had so much to give, we as councillors in the City are still grappling with the passing of the late former City of Johannesburg mayor, councillor Makhubo, just over two months ago. And now this devastating blow.”

Inkatha Freedom Party also shared condolences through Gauteng provincial chairperson Bonginkosi Dhlamini who stated, “Mayor Matongo served with a fervent spirit and the utmost dedication to the citizens of Johannesburg.

“His loss is felt not only by members of his family and his political organisation but the rest of the citizens of Gauteng.”
