“I served with Councillor Matongo since 2016, and while we may have sat on opposite sides of the chamber, he was always approachable. His infectious laugh and vibrant personality will be missed in the council benches. My condolences to his family and friends and to the ANC Joburg caucus. This term of office has been shrouded in tragedy – we have lost too many councillors. The loss of Councillor Matongo’s young life is heart-breaking. ‘Grief never ends, but it changes. It’s a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith. It is a price of love’ – Author unknown.

The tragic passing of Mayor Matongo has come as a shock to many residents of Ward 98. Mayor Matongo’s objective to work with all political parties in an attempt to provide service delivery, was key to his tenure. Mayor Matongo treated each individual with respect and his kindness echoed within the council chambers, Section 79 committees and on the streets. We have certainly lost a good soul too soon. We extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Mayor Matongo’s family, friends and colleagues.

It was a great shock to hear of the passing of the mayor. After only serving a short time as mayor we felt that he was very approachable. My colleagues in the finance department shared that he worked well with all of them. He still had a great contribution to make to the City and its unfortunate he was taken so soon.

Encounters with Jolidee Matongo in his capacity as mayor were necessarily limited. He held that office for a mere 36 days. He was always likeable and energetic. A ‘Jolly Good Fellow’ indeed. Earlier this year, in his capacity as an MMC, Matongo was in charge of a virtual public meeting to discuss the integrated development plan for Region B. He impressed residents with his eagerness to listen to their concerns, and to take them seriously. These qualities would have served him well as mayor. His tragic death at such a young age (46) is truly a loss for the City.
