Should Gautrain be a priority when there are other issues at hand?

Randburg – A reader has questioned whether the proposed development of Gautrain into Randburg is in fact in the best interest of the community.

Margaret O’Callaghan from North Riding writes:

A headline in the Randburg Sun two weeks ago informed us of a proposed extension to the Gautrain at a cost of R44 billion, Gautrain plans on track in Randburg, [Week ending August 20].

I find this incredible news when we have been having major water outages in North Riding and surrounding areas for the past two months. Water outages last days not hours.

Over the past two weeks water was off for nine days in total.

Bellaires Drive was recently resurfaced and a manhole cover on Bellaires Drive (near Blandford Road) was tarred over. Within days water started to leak from the adjacent property and it was a disaster waiting to happen.

Sure enough, there was a major burst which took several days to repair. Following the ‘repair’, several more pipes burst in the area and subsequently we have been without water for days.

We do not need taxpayers’ money wasted on a method of transport for a small section of the community. We need the water infrastructure upgraded in this area for all sections of the community.

How other Randburgers feel about the proposed Gautrain development

THYS JANSE VAN RENSBURG: Hmm, so any operational losses the Gautrain suffers is guaranteed by Government via your taxes. They are not profitable as far as I know and now they are expanding?! Seems some pockets are getting greased.

PHIL SMITH: Who wants to go to little falls FFS !!!!! The new extension should spur off the existing line at sandton & 1st stop Randburg CBD , 4ways ( right in the middle between 4ways mall & monte casino, lion park ( for Cosmo city ) then Lanseria

MARK GITHINJI: Who uses it and how much are tax payers paying to bail them out.

AGNES WATSON: Did it in the UK. Properties are valued and offers made. If these are not accepted they will just go to court and get orders to take what is needed. Hopefully people will take the money and make good use of it. However, the way things work it could take a while so I would wait and see. People starving and yet money to build this.
