Ward 134 problems, plans and positives

Good work has been done in the area recently but Ward 134 councillor Wendy Alexander believes there is still much to do.

Alexander, who is also the chief whip of the DA in Joburg, escalated issues leading to the resurfacing of busy Bellairs Drive in North Riding, and installation of street lights on President Fouché Drive and Kelly Avenue through Randburg and in Bromhof respectively.

“There didn’t used to be street lights so it was good to get those up,” she told Randburg Sun.

“Billing issues are also better than they were a few years ago but there are still some to sort out. The biggest challenge right now is service delivery in general.”

This because municipal utilities were facing a shortage of resources and roughly only a third of the staff were back at work at this stage of the lockdown.

“We are constantly patching potholes and I have asked that CR Swart Drive, Puttick Avenue and Drysdale Road are also resurfaced. We will know whether that can be done when the new budget is provided.

“I think all residents want are good roads, to have their lights stay on, water in their taps, their rubbish collected and a regular and accurate bill. “Anything out of the ordinary we can manage. But there are always issues with these things and it is never easy or simple.”

Alexander said while a few years ago City Power had teams that sorted out daily problems and others that performed maintenance, now it was almost always crisis management – the putting out of proverbial fires every day and barely any maintenance.

“But even if things improved we can never be content because today’s achievements become tomorrow’s standard. People deserve good service and we need to look at improving the lives of everyone.”

Alexander encouraged residents to make their comments known about the proposed tariff increases by emailing ratescomments@joburg.org.za and pumzaj@joburg.org.za by 3 May.

The ward councillor also encouraged community members to WhatsApp her as she was often in council meetings and could respond more quickly that way.

Residents can also email her.
