Firearm amnesty ends this month

RANDBURG – The national firearm amnesty is still in place for the next few weeks.

Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja would like to remind the public that the national firearm amnesty was still in place for the next few weeks.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele declared the firearm amnesty for a period of six months and will end on 31 January.
The amnesty aims to see a reduced number of illegally possessed firearms in circulation in the country. It provides firearm owners with the opportunity to hand in illegal and unwanted firearms/ammunition, which will hopefully see a result in the prevention of crime and promotion of safety in our communities.

It provides an indemnity from prosecution to any person for the unlawful possession of a firearm, firearm parts and ammunition.
“We are urging people to take advantage of this period either to hand in those firearms and ammunition, either for destruction or renewal of a competency certificate and a valid licence,” said Maja.
Any unlawfully possessed or unwanted firearms/parts and ammunition can be surrendered.

Unlawfully possessed firearms/parts and ammunition are:

  • Firearms not registered to the current owner
  • Firearms that do not have a serial number or has a defaced (removed) serial number
  • Firearms possessed by a person who does not have a licence for that firearm.

Unwanted firearms/parts and ammunition are:

  • Firearms that are lawfully possessed but their owners no longer need or require them
  • Firearms that are unsafe to use, or are in a poor condition
  • Firearms that were inherited by a person from the deceased and such person is not interested in them
  • Firearms that were left behind by the previous owner of a property and were found on such property.

All firearms and firearm parts surrendered will be ballistics tested and the firearms/parts and ammunition will be forfeited to the state to be destroyed.

Any firearm may be surrendered at your nearest police station.
