Bond Street storm water project delayed

FERNDALE – Stormwater drainage upgrades on Bond Street will be delayed until February 2021.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood is alerting Bond Street commuters that construction to improve important stormwater drainage infrastructure will be delayed.

“We were informed by the Johannesburg Roads Agency [JRA] that the project will be put on hold till early February 2021. This is to allow the private service providers to relocate their services,” said Wood.

According to Wood, the relocation of water, electricity and communication services is needed to give allowable space for the installation of culverts and stormwater pipes along the road where the project is being implemented.

Long after the project started in September 2017, the road has deteriorated, resulting in large potholes and a rough road surface posing a danger to commuters.

Wood added that he had recommended that JRA close the road from Elgin Avenue to Vale Avenue in the interim due to its rapid deterioration. “This is not my call as the ward councillor, but JRA will assess the road surface to see if temporary repairs can take place.

“We apologise to all residents for the inconvenience caused, but our main concern is the safety of all residents and commuters.”

The main project aims to help with stormwater drainage along the Klein Jukskei River with construction work commencing on Bond Street.

“Both Ward 102 councillor David Potter and I will be monitoring the situation going forward. We will continue to engage with JRA to get parts of Bond Street reinstated.”

The Randburg Sun had contacted the JRA and was awaiting a response.
