Police warn residents staying in Joburg and those going away to bear the following safety information in mind during the festive season.

Sandton police warn residents staying in Joburg and those going away to bear the following safety information in mind during the festive season.

Spokesperson of the Sandton Police Station Captain Bheki Xulu said that residents should be weary of allowing their domestic workers to take care of their homes over the festive season.

“We find that there are a lot of undocumented domestic workers and often they are part of the organised house robberies,” said Sector 3 Commander at the Sandton Police Station Captain VP Moleya.

He said that some domestic workers taking care of properties call the owner while they are away, acting like an innocent victim of the crime, but according to him, they stage the robbery.

“Rather ask a friend or family member to check in on your house while you are away.

Xulu provided the following tips to community members planning on going away during the festive season:

  • Don’t share your personal information with anyone
  • Ask a trusted friend or neighbour to remove your mail from outside your house
  • Don’t leave outside lights on when you are away. Rather leave inside lights on
  • Make sure your alarm is in good working order before going away
  • Make sure that you get confirmation and identification from anyone coming to your house to conduct work while you are away.
