Honeydew police clamp down on illegal liquor outlets

In a recent incident in Cosmo City on 15 September, the Honeydew Police Station officers raided an illegal liquor outlet where the owner was allegedly selling liquor without a licence.

The Honeydew police have made it their mission to clamp down on illegal shebeens and the illegal sale of alcohol and the crime that stems from it.

In a recent incident in Cosmo City on 15 September, the Honeydew Police Station officers raided an illegal liquor outlet where the owner was allegedly selling liquor without a licence.

The owner of the establishment was arrested on charges of selling liquor without a licence and was detained at the station.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said, “During the higher stages of the Covid-19 lockdown, the levels of crime in our area was highly minimal. As the lockdown levels were relaxed, we have definitely noticed an increase in the levels of crime. We want people to know that Honeydew will no longer be a ‘playground’ for criminals.”

Muthan said that the opening of pubs and taverns and the open sale of alcohol have resulted in increased cases of illegal activity such as grievous bodily harm and assault. “Here at Honeydew Police Station, and all of the other stations in our area, we are clamping down on illegal shebeens and liquor outlets. We have received many cases of fighting and assaults outside of these taverns, and we will be focusing our efforts into curbing these incidents.”

Muthan further encouraged community members to report establishments that may be selling liquor illegally and when assaults occur. “You can call your nearest police station or crime stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be given anonymously via MySAPS App that can be downloaded from any smartphone,” he concluded.
