Tragic: Small baby killed by dog in Eagle Canyon

Police said that the infant began to cry and one of the dogs entered the room to investigate. “Acting on maternal instincts, the dog picked up the child by the neck before dropping it again."

The Randburg SPCA and Honeydew Police have confirmed that a young baby* was killed by a dog in Eagle Canyon on 4 September.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said that the dog was not vicious, and the case was extremely unfortunate.

“A domestic worker and her infant live with the domestic worker’s employer in Eagle Canyon. The baby was sleeping in the domestic quarters of the house while its mother was cleaning. The family the domestic worker is employed by, owns Huskies,” said Muthan.

He said that the infant began to cry and one of the dogs entered the room to investigate. “Acting on maternal instincts, the dog picked up the child by the neck before dropping it again. This was enough to cause a serious injury to the child,” continued Muthan.

He said that paramedics were called to the scene and tried their best to resuscitate the child. The child unfortunately succumbed to its injuries and passed away.

Head of Inspectorate for the Randburg SPCA Shiven Bodasing said that the dog is in the possession of the SPCA at this time.

“The animal will be held by us in respect of the inquest into the incident, and as far as we know, the dog was the cause of the infant’s death. The police will be investigating the matter,” said Bodasing. The dog is now in the care of the SPCA and will form part of a police investigation into the matter.

This is a developing story and more information will follow as it becomes available.
