Police officers respond to call for community assistance

Police officers from Honeydew Police Station’s robbery reaction unit have responded to the call for essential goods required by those in need during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The officers, who frequently patrol areas in Cosmo City and Zandspruit, saw many people with a shortage of food and supplied needed goods during the lockdown. “There are families out there who cannot afford the basic means to survive, especially during this time of lockdown,” said Honeydew police constable Lesedi Leketi.

From their own pockets, the officers rallied the support of other members of the Honeydew Police Station to fund a contribution of food and other essential goods for those in need in various local townships.

“We bought enough food to feed nine families. We have driven around the area that we work in to identify the families that need theses goods the most,” said Leketi.

Leketi was asked what life was like for a police officer during the Covid-19 lockdown.

“As police officers who have to work during the coronavirus lockdown, it is tough. We have to interact with so many people daily. However, we are following all the rules in place to make sure that we follow safe hygiene practices and wear safety equipment to not get infected.”

The families live in Zandspruit, Cosmo City, and the Itsuseng informal settlement.”Even before the lockdown started, we could see that there was a need for this. When we saw things getting worse, we knew we had to help out. This is something that we as police officers will continue to do during this time and maybe beyond,” concluded Leketi.
