A shelter for the homeless in Fontainebleau

The homeless shelter can accommodate up to 35 people and there is a dire need for the community to support those in need with various essential goods.

Things are going very well at a temporary homeless shelter in Fontainebleau, but more more help is always welcomed.

Last month, ward 104 councillor Mike Wood was proud to announce the establishment of the temporary homeless shelter in his ward at the Fontainebleau Community Church on Rabie Street.

The homeless shelter can accommodate up to 35 people and there is a dire need for the community to support those in need with various essential goods.

Wood said that there is a need for toiletries, toilet paper, warm clothes, blankets, face cloths, non-perishable foods, cooking utensils, hotplates, electric kettles, and more.

“At the moment, the shelter only caters to homeless men and is being managed by One Small Act of Kindness and Doorway to Dignity,” he said.Kelly-Ann van der Meer from One Small Act of Kindness, said that all was well at the shelter. “We really have created a family bond, and we have tried to help everyone individually to develop their skills while they are here,” she said.

She also added that at the shelter, the men use their time constructively and are taught skills in pottery and writing, and the hope is that these skills can be used after the lockdown period is over.Wood added that further drop-off points are available for those in the Malanshof and Windsor West area.

“We have also asked the SPAR in Malanshof, who is already helping to feed the homeless in their area, to put a trolley outside of their shop for shoppers to donate essential goods, especially toiletries, at their stores in Malanshof and Windsor West.”

Van der Meer added, “We currently need help with food parcels from the community, so any non-perishable food items will be welcomed. All goods can be delivered to the church.”Details: Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood 082 853 2174, or www.onesmallactofkindness.co.za
