Frustrated Bordeaux South residents petition for water maintainance

BORDEAUX – Bordeaux South residents have petitioned to the City to fix ageing water infrastructure in the suburb.

The residents of Bordeaux South are so frustrated with the ongoing water pipe bursts across their suburb that they have petitioned the City to sort the problem out.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter said that this frustration stems from many years of ageing water infrastructure and continuous bursts across the suburb.

The residents submitted a petition to the City of Joburg and water entity Joburg Water via Potter last year.

Potter said, “Joburg Water was responsive to the petition, but cited budget constrains to replace the pipes in the suburb, but committed to repairing ongoing bursts as and when they occur.”

The response from Joburg Water said, “Since this is a big project and requires a lot of resources, it will not be implemented any time soon. The Zandfontein South Depot has acknowledged the problems that are being experienced on the ground and they have committed to attend to bursts as they occur until funds become available for the project to be implemented.

“However, the lead petitioner and the ward councillor will be updated on developments around this matter.”

Potter added that as Bordeaux South is on the end of the water supply network these ‘last mile pipes’ seem to take the brunt of the bursts.

Potter said that he hopes the City of Joburg and Joburg Water will prioritise the need for new water pipe infrastructure in the suburb of Bordeaux South.

“This suburb is the most affected section of the 16 square kilometres of Ward 102 in terms of the number of water pipe bursts,” he concluded.
