Cyber Cadets teach cyber security

COSMO CITY – The programme aims to expose the youth to technology, teach them to be safe on the internet, and maintain a level of respect for others online.

In the modern world, technology rules a large part of our lives. Communication, work, education and retail are just some aspects where technology has seeped in to revolutionise the way things are done. It follows that the tools needed to navigate our safety on the web have increased in importance, and this is where the cyber heroes have come to the rescue. Areas, where the cyber heroes have launched their rocket ship, are Cosmo City, Thembisa, Diepsloot and Alexandra Township, for people aged seven to 35.

Sizwe Lushozi (24) conceptualised the idea for cyber heroes and cadets, where his team of cyber heroes go into previously disadvantaged areas to spread the cyber safety commandments. The programme aims to expose the youth to technology, teach them to be safe on the internet, and maintain a level of respect for others online. The programme has included drone training and coding festivals among others and has been split up for different ages to reach participants effectively.

Learners have also been encouraged to join their WhatsApp group where they interact and affirm each other in cases of cyberbullying.

“Cyberbullying happens more than you think… The WhatsApp group is there so people do not feed the bully with a reaction,” explained Lushozi who went on to express disdain at the nature of bullies.

After the groundwork has been laid, cyber cadets go through a process where they must learn, and complete levels in order to ascend to the next level. Emphasis has been placed on adequate preparation for the fourth industrial revolution throughout.

“I wanted to give the youth the same chances that I had. This is about the youth.”
