Young bowlers do Randburg Bowls Club proud

BOSKRUIN – Emma Murohy, Lethabo Mathibela and Xavian Kramer earn medals at the Gauteng Challenge.


Randburg Bowls Club is celebrating the success of three of its younger bowlers after they were selected to play in the Gauteng Challenge inter-provincial tournament.

The tournament, which was held on 18 and 19 January in Pretoria, comprised teams from provincial districts across Gauteng, and included, veteran men and women, open men and women A and B, U20 and U30 sections.

Emma Murphy (20), who has been at the club since she was 10, played in the U30 section of the tournament and finished in a respectable fourth place. Her mother and grandparents all represented the club’s 1st teams in the past. Murphy has played interprovincial bowls previously.

“I love the camaraderie and friendships that can be built with bowlers of our age from all of the districts and I enjoyed o getting out there, bowling well and making new friends,” said Murphy.

Lethabo Mathibela (16) has been playing bowls for six years. He won a silver medal in the U20 division. Lethabo previously represented Johannesburg Bowls Association at the junior inter-provincial tournament in Bloemfontein and earned silver there.

Xavian Kramer (14) also won a silver in the tournament, in the same team as Lethabo in the U20 division. He has played bowls for five years and is also a previous silver medal winner at the inter-provincials.

“I was so excited to be playing again,” the youngster said.

“It was nice meeting some of the friends I made at previous inter-provincial tournaments.”

President of Randburg Bowls Club, Laurie Stafford said, “Emma, Xavian and Lethabo are very talented bowlers and deserved to be taking part in this tournament. We as Randburg are very proud of them. We are sure they will go from strength to strength. Randburg is a club that welcomes all bowlers.”
