Cancer survivor pays it forward

RANDBURG – Landy Yeatman, a Randburg resident for 44 years, was inspired by the care received while surviving breast cancer to give back to those who need it.

“I am a recent cancer survivor and I received lots and lots of help. I’m on medical aid and all that stuff… but if it wasn’t for the help and generosity of friends, family, colleagues and even total strangers, I actually wouldn’t have made it that far.”

Landy Yeatman (44) detailed her role as a moderator on the I Love Randburg Facebook page which has given her a window to challenges residents in the area faced. She admittedly has her Facebook open on her desktop throughout the day, while she goes about her day job.

Yeatman is four months into remission after six months of chemotherapy and 28 sessions of radiation to treat her breast cancer. After her recovery from the disease, Yeatman felt called to do more to pay it forward in the community she has grown up, raised her two daughters in and overcome cancer in.

“Helping others is part of my healing process.”

Once a post on the page has caught her eye, she continues to do further research into the needs of that person or the organisation that they represent. This involves correspondence of some sort with the party in need of assistance. The assistance she facilitates is often donation-based, where her network helps with the donation of tangible items, skills or their time. One of her most recent projects has been the assistance of young women with their CV formats, while they seek employment. Although she has headed this call to become a more active member of her community, she has been cautioned by loved ones to take it easy.

Yeatman has considered the establishment of a non-profit organisation one day, however, she has currently prioritised her health overexpansion with the work that she does in the community. She has appealed to the Randburg community to get involved, not just in Randburg but in any way they can, wherever they can.
