Volunteers needed

HONEYDEW – Qualified psychologists and trauma counsellors are needed as volunteers for the victim support unit in the new year.

The Honeydew police are appealing to qualified psychologists and trauma counsellors to join them as volunteers in their victim support unit for the new year.

Honeydew Police Station spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said that the unit, which works in conjunction with the community policing forum and police officers, has the specific role of being present at a crime scene to assist the victims with trauma and counselling.

Assisting as a volunteer in this unit is no easy job, but if done right it can make the handling of a crime scene a lot easier.

Essentially, Muthan said the role of victim support is to simply be there for a family going through some sort of trauma, keeping them calm and protecting them from any further trauma.

Volunteers explain to the victims what they can expect over the next few hours after a crime has happened. This is done either at the police station or the scene of the crime. Additionally, the unit assists in calling family members and helping with necessary tasks. “The victim support unit is in constant need of qualified volunteers, and the task, although tough, is a highly rewarding one at the end of the day.”
