Sustainability at Safe Haven

RANDPARK RIDGE – Tanna Bailes' Scout group hall has partnered with Sandton-based childcare home Village Safe Haven.

Tanna Bailes was the first to break ground inside the constructed greenhouse made out of a combination of recycled and raw materials measured to perfection. Tanna chose to create a greenhouse as her project on her journey to the Springbok level of Scouts for a group foster-care facility Village Safe Haven. This involved the collection of 2 litre plastic bottles and money all done in the Randburg district.

The construction project has formed part of the Springbok level of Scouts. The fourth and final level required Scouts to create something. The Springbok level is the fourth and final level of Scouts, which has a percentage completion of 0.02 per cent. Scout leader Yvonne van der Merwe shed light on the path Tanna embarked on to this moment.

“We don’t like to rush them… They often take a year and a half to complete the advancement level. Since Tanna is 18 next year, she has until then to complete the level and she has been moving very fast.”

Michael Harris has run Village Safe Haven with his wife where they take care of 24 children. Harris spoke about how they felt Tanna’s efforts in collaboration with her Scout group have been ‘awesome’. Harris was grateful to Tanna and the Scouts for all their hard work since they connected in August of this year.

“We tried to find an orphanage that needed it most and they were our first option,” were Tanna’s words.

Tanna wanted a special mention given to all her fellow Scouts who helped make this all possible. This included Luke Bridle, Ethan Redgement, Megan Weston, Michael Lever, Amiee Coertzen, Corbin van Niekerk and Robyn Rankine.
