Diggers Rugby Club hosts annual 7s tournament

PRAEGVILLE – Community members enjoy a fun day out at a sevens tournament at Diggers Rugby Club.


It was action-packed sevens rugby all day long at the fourth annual World of Rugby Diggers 7s.

The tournament drew a crowd of spectators to Diggers Rugby Club in Praegville, where the faster-paced format of the game promised tries galore on 12 October.

Food, drinks and arts and craft stalls were set up around the venue to keep the crowd happy while 10 teams from across Gauteng played in 23 matches.

“Each year [the tournament] has grown by about 20 per cent in participation and the quality of teams has improved each year since its inception,” said Diggers club manager, Andrew Collison.

“The tournament’s aim is to create a family type environment where people can enjoy some good fast sevens rugby as well as a good day out experiencing local stalls, food and family vibe.”

He said teams from as far as the Vaal, Randfontein and Midrand participated and represented a ‘great cross section of the rugby community’.

“The highlight of the day was probably the two semi-finals which saw some great rugby and some great individual performances.”

Johannesburg Police Rugby Club (Bobbies) and DC Predators progressed to the final which proved to be another exciting match.

“We’ll be hosting the event again next year and we hope to grow it further by adding more junior teams as well children’s events and maybe even a women’s division. We want the community to attend the event as it will not only be about the rugby but the stalls and other activities and an overall good day at the local rugby club.”
