Captain of entertainment

RANDBURG SUN – Sailing through the entertainment seas is 25-year-old powerhouse Simo Zokwana aka Captain Zee. Born and raised in the Eastern Cape in Mthatha and now a resident of Randburg, Simo has always seen himself as a leader.

“Growing up I was always part of these sports teams, and in all these teams I have always taken the leadership role. Being a captain of more than one team in school, they started calling me ‘Captain’ and it stuck.

I added the ‘Zee’ just for control, it’s ‘Zee’ from my surname Zokwana,” he laughed. Still leading in his own right being a radio DJ, financial guru, producer, director and the list goes on, Simo has already made his name known in the entertainment space with his media house, Zee Big Days.

“I am an entertainment hub myself because I started off in radio, it’s my passion. When it comes to visuals I’m brilliant behind the camera, when it comes to audio I’m brilliant behind the mic so that’s what I know and that’s what I’m going to stick to and that’s my brand too, I want to leave a legacy,” he said passionately.

Simo intends to create jobs for other creatives through his business while remaining relevant. Currently, he also has a videoon-demand (VOD) website – aperture.com in the works which is a platform for people to tell their stories, “I want to start something for the people and this is it, aperture is a space within a camera that allows light in and that’s exactly what I want to do, just like the aperture I want people’s stories to shine through.”

His journey into the entertainment industry started in the corporate world. As a BCom Financial Management graduate, he started in sales at youth radio station YFM, six months later he was on the airwaves with his own late-night show.

“Because of the talent God gave me my boss called and said, ‘I need you on air’. I jumped onto the radio and I never looked back.

Being outside, being on location makes me extremely happy. “Seeing people and engaging with people who make me happy is what I enjoy so I thought to myself that my happiness will come first.” A mommy’s boy at heart, Simo still listens to her advice.

“My mom always told us that we always need to be in a space where we feel happy and that we don’t need to work like she did because she put us through good schools.

“She still says today, ‘You can get yourself out of any situation so make life work for you instead of the other way around’.” Happy, handsome and hopeful, it is only a matter of time before we hear Captain Zee on our airwaves again.

“The Captain is just getting started! So stay tuned,” he added very excitedly. When he is not out entertaining and doing great things, he loves going to his favourite pub, Sunrise ,in Randburg, partying till the sun comes up.
