Parklife in Emmarentia was a hit

The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia played host to the Parklife Johannesburg Festival onWomen’s Day, 9 August and was complemented with a welcomed appearance by the sunshine. The local acts who took to the stage were Werner Bekker, Janie Bay, Charlie Finch, Desmond, and The Tutus, Lady Zamar, aKing, Ross Learmonth from Prime Circle and Matthew Mole. Festivalgoers eagerly sang along to performances with their chests pressed up against the railing separating them from their favourite musical acts and their hands in the air. Singer Lady Zamar was particularly well-received by the crowd as audience members sang along word for word to hit after hit throughout her set. These festivities were also a way to celebrate the liberties women fought for in 1956. Women’s Day commemorates and celebrates the 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings and contested women carrying passbooks to then Prime Minister JG Strijdom. At Parklife, men and women were able to celebrate the day in mutual cheer.

The festival grounds were littered with camp chairs and picnic blankets, surrounded by stalls which sold various foodstuffs, refreshments, clothing, arts and crafts and a beer tent guarded by security on entrance. There were also stations which allowed festivalgoers to top up their points on their cards, as many festivals and concerts now make use of cards which consumers load money onto and use them as a proxy for money.

Weather conditions behaved on the day and were the perfect way to welcome the spring months which are only a few weeks away.
