Woman convicted for violation of protection order

BEVERLY GARDENS – The woman was convicted to five years' imprisonment in the Randburg Magistrate's Court.

A 24-year-old woman was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court for violation of a protection order and defamation of character.

It is alleged that on 17 April the victim went to the Randburg court to apply for a protection order against the woman, who is also his ex-girlfriend. The order was granted to the applicant and provisions were endorsed after the woman had failed to appear in court to present her version.

It is further alleged that during the same week, she went to the applicant’s home although it had been stated in the order that she was prohibited to enter the applicant’s place of residence or work. “She even went to the applicant’s work place whereby she was forcibly removed by the security officers,” explained Captain Makgowanyana Maja of the Randburg Police Station.

Maja added that the applicant decided to report the matter to the police as the respondent contravened all the provisions set out in the protection order. “The docket was opened and a warrant issued for her arrest. She was arrested on 27 June for violation of the protection order, and defamation of character.”

She was found guilty by the court for contravention of the Domestic Violence Act and sentenced as follows:

  • Count 1 sentenced to a fine of R6 000 or two months’ imprisonment
  • Count 2 sentenced to a period of two years’ imprisonment
  • Count 3 sentenced for a period of three years’ imprisonment.
