Smiles beam at Cosmo City Primary No1 School

COSMO CITY – Grade 1s of Cosmo City Primary No1 School were taught the importance of oral hygiene to mark World Oral Health Day.

If sitting in a dentist chair can be unsettling for adults, just imagine how fearful a child can be at the same prospect.

Teaching children the importance of oral hygiene at an early age is important. This is why days like World Oral Health Day, which is observed annually on 20 March are important. Through such days one is educated about their teeth and why it is so important to take of them.

This is why smiles shone even brighter at Cosmo City Primary No 1 School recently when the children received free dental checks. These checks were done by volunteer dentists who spent their morning conducting basic dental checks to see if the children had any cavities or if they needed urgent treatment. Some of the biggest aims for the day was to show the little ones that the dentist is not a scary place and that it should be seen more as a safe and fun space for them. On the day children were given a toothbrush, and a tube of toothpaste from Mentadent P, while those who required further treatment received a referral letter to take home to their parents.

Assistant brand manager at Oral Care, Unilever South Africa Babalwa Lupondwana said, “We are proud to be impacting South African children at scale through this partnership and impact their hygiene and sanitation habits in a positive way to improve their health and their school attendance and experience. This campaign is part of more than 25-year commitment from Mentadent P, Unilever Oral hygiene to improving oral health which has reached over 75 million lives to date, globally.”

The school’s Grade 1 teacher, Mary Mohulatse said, “These dental checks are so important for Grade 1 learners. The curriculum now covers health topics including taking care of your teeth, how to brush your teeth and how to keep the body healthy. The children learn these habits at school and then go home and teach their families.”
