UPDATE: Cosmo City protest turns violent

COSMO CITY – Commuters and motorists are urged to make use of alternative routes as some of the roads have reportedly been shut down.

COSMO CITY – According to reports on Twitter, police have opened fire on protesters in Cosmo City. Four people, including a five-year-old, have allegedly been shot with rubber bullets.

The residents of Cosmo City have started burning tyres and restricting access for cars to pass through. The Cosmo City shopping centre and the multipurpose centre have also been closed down.

Protestors include residents from extensions 2 and 6. Some of the residents are said to be protesting for the councillor to step down while others are supporting the councillor.

While the N14 highway has been cleared for motorists travelling between Pretoria and Krugersdorp, other roads in the area have reportedly been shut down and commuters and motorists are urged to make use of alternative routes.

According to Cosmo City Chronicle journalist Dumani Moyo who is tweeting from his account @Adolph_89, “It started peaceful and got out of control when the police started with the tear gas and stun grenades, now it looks likes it’s a strike no longer a march.”

This is a developing story and more updates will be provided as it becomes available.
