The King of the Whip brings the best tricks, flips and whips to North Riding

NORTH RIDING – South Africa's best motocross riders do flips, whips and tricks at the King of the Whip.

Amazing, unbelievable and impossible were some words used between gasps by members of the crowd when South Africa’s best motocross and freestyle motocross riders showed off their skills at the King of the Whip.

The third annual event at Biker’s Warehouse, North Riding, entertained thousands on 2 February. Food, drinks, merchandise and even Playstation games kept fans busy while they braaied and used their cars or gazebos as make-shift picnic spots during the free event.

But when the riders came out, all eyes were on them. All through the evening, the courageous entertainers launched themselves off a ramp at speed, doing whips, flips and tricks in the air before landing again.

A whip is when the rider turns the rear of the motorcycle around to the side while in the air and the rider who does this the best is crowned King of the Whip. This year there were also competitions for FMX best right-side-up and upside-down tricks.

The event, which is presented by LW Mag and Monster Energy in association with Motul, PlayStation and Fox Racing saw last year’s winner, Dallan Goldman, show his multitude of skills with a great one-handed flat-liner and dialled super-flip to win both the right-side-up and upside-down categories respectively.

After four rounds, a semi-final and final, judges felt justified to award Scott Billett the title King of the Whip. Goldman finished second and Joshua Mlimi third. The three took home a share of the R40 000 cash prize.

“I’m almost at a loss for words – what an insane show,” said event organiser, Ryan van der Spuy.

“This event just keeps growing bigger and better and is worth every second of time and effort that goes into making King of the Whip happen. This event is for the riders and to see how much they stepped up their game. This year was a privilege to witness.”
