Ward councillors commit to helping replace sewer pipe

FERNDALE – A broken sewer pipe that runs alongside the Ferndale Spruit has been repaired.

FERNDALE – Ward councillors Mike Wood and David Potter made it their mission to ensure that a broken sewer pipe that runs alongside the Ferndale Spruit was repaired.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter said, “Mike Wood and I were alerted to the broken sewer pipe along Hill Street in Ferndale during November 2018.”

According to Potter, the broken pipe had been leaking raw sewage into the spruit, posing an environmental and health hazard to the neighbouring community.

Potter said, “Very shortly after it was reported, Joburg Water immediately wrapped the pipe to prevent further sewer contamination into the river.

“More recently, the City has completed the replacement of the sewer pipe, and regular service has been restored.”

Potter added that residents are encouraged to look for issues in their street and suburb, then log the issues with the relevant City department or City entity.

Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood and Ward 102 councillor David Potter stand near the Ferndale Spruit.

Should the City not attend to the logged issues within a reasonable amount of time, linked to the City’s service standards timeframe, the issues should be reported to the relevant ward councillor who will escalate to the City for hopeful resolution, linked to available resources and budget.
