Protesting Kya Sand workers clean up

If you have frequented the Kya Sand area in the past few days, you will have noticed that the main streets into the area have been thoroughly cleaned.

The cleaning comes after a month of protests took place in the area by Pikitup workers who became unemployed due to the cancellation of their contracts.

The 110 workers have worked the past week on a voluntary basis and this situation is likely to continue for at least this week or until such time as an agreement is reached with their original employer.

Kya Sand community leader Billy Modikwe said, “The newly formed community liaison committee met with six of the informal settlement community leaders last Thursday, with positive results all around.

It was stressed that the community and business needed to work together and a willingness was expressed by both sides.”

An apology issued by community representatives was received for the way the Pikitup workers trashed the streets of Kya Sand and Bloubosrand over the past month.

Modikwe said, “[The protesters] were trying to attract Pikitup’s attention in the only way they knew how.

In any event, we have received a solid promise from the leaders that such an incident will never happen again.

“During this voluntary period, the workers have been and will be without any income and the committee has undertaken to assist by way of food parcels to provide for them and their families.

It would be highly appreciated if the local community and businesses would sponsor all or part of these hampers.”
