St Stithians’ rowers achieve excellent results at Gauteng junior championships

St Stithians girls' rowing team works together in union to obtain their medals.

The St Stithians Girls’ College has won loads of medals with their rowing club that entered one of the biggest rowing squads into this year’s Junior Gauteng Rowing Championships.

The rowers achieved excellent results across all age groups.

Eighteen novice rowers in the U14 age groups entered. The girls attained eighth place in the girls singles, a silver medal in the doubles, fourth place in the quads and a gold medal in the octuple scull.

The U15 girls also performed well. In the sculls, they managed to obtain a fifth and sixth place. Their U15 doubles bagged silver, the quads achieved bronze and octuple scull won gold.

The U16 age group achieved a gold medal and a fourth place in the singles, a gold medal and eighth place in the doubles and ended up in fourth place overall.

The open girls attained fourth in the 1st girls’ octuple scull and a fifth place in the doubles, a bronze in the second girls’ quads and fourth place in the 1st girls’ quad.

James Buchanan, head rowing coach at St Stithians Girls’ College said, “It was a great weekend of rowing and the guts and determination shown by all the rowers was admirable. They are all motivated and keen to train even harder in the coming months in order to achieve even more at the SA Schools Rowing Champs next year.”
