Sharonlea community clean up their spruit

SHARONLEA – Another successful Spruit Day was held that the community embraced with decked in work boots and gloves.

A Spruit Day left the community feeling accomplished as they worked hard to ensure they cleaned out their much-loved natural beauty.

Chairperson of the Sharonlea Action Group, Nicolette Joubert explained the community gathered on 22 September to clean the Sharonlea Spruit following last year’s successful Spruit Day. “Last year we pulled out bags upon bags of litter but also trees that were blocking the spruit.”

This year their mission was the same and there was a lot of work done to be done to ensure the spruit looked it best. All their efforts were to make sure that when the spring rains come in, they do not take down big trees and damage the flow of the river. Joubert said it was important to ensure the preservation of this natural beauty as many community members use it especially the children, and it needs to be clean and safe for them to utilise. “It is also good that we clean this space based on criminal aspect too, the more we clean out the spruit and make everything visible, the more secure the resident’s feel.”

The community came out in their numbers throughout the day to show their support for a cause that is beneficial to them. Joubert saw this as a way for the community to build relationships with one another. She also believes that there is no better community than hers because all its members are unified by one goal, the success of a community. “We are incredibly diverse and we all work together.”

The community’s hope through this specific Spruit Day was to ensure the river was kept healthy and that people could enjoy the river.
