Be aware of policing boundaries when following-up on a crime

RANDBURG – Following up on a reported crime needs to be done at the relevant station, for your benefit.

The Randburg police are notifying the public to be aware of policing boundaries after they have reported a crime.

“Once a crime is investigated at our station, it belongs to us, and therefore any inquiry about it should be taken up with us, and not at another station,” said Randburg Police Station spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja.

Maja noted that any crime can be reported at any police station, regardless of area. It is only the investigation and information pertaining to it that will be handled at one particular station.

Maja continued, “If a crime is being investigated outside of our policing area, any information regarding that crime will take place at the station investigating that matter.”

The Randburg police will only have important information on cases that they are investigating themselves.

For instance, if a crime is reported at the Sandton Police Station, and assigned to an officer there, then any follow-up to that matter needs to take place at the Sandton station.

Maja indicated that adhering to these boundaries is important so that the relevant steps can be taken, such as the deployment of officers and planning for the investigation.

“Any crime can be reported at any police station, and on the police call emergency centre number 10111. The crime and information pertaining to it will be sent to the relevant police station covering the area where the crime took place,” Maja added.
