Word Warriors called to prove the pen truly is mightier than the sword

HONEYDEW – This year's Read Word Warrior Competition hosted by Read Educational Trust will have kids on a mission to captivate its readers until the last word as they write to ensure their school receives R5000 worth of books.

Albert Einstien once quipped, ‘Creativity is contagious, pass it on.’

He certainly knew what he was speaking about, and when it comes to encouraging creativity and imagination in our youth, just think of the untold treasure waiting to be discovered.

This is one of many reasons why Read Educational Trust is particularly encouraged to talk about the annual Read Word Warrior Competition, a platform used to promote literacy, reading and the art of creative writing among young South Africans.

Last year’s competition drew a host of interesting entries and the organisation was pleased to announce that its Word Warrior was Lolo Legoabe of Boskop Primary School in Honeydew.

She and other competitors had to describe their idea of ‘My Treasure’, and Legoabe gave a wonderful insight into her family of five, always there for each other, no matter what they face in life.

Open to schoolchildren from the ages of nine through 16, this year’s competition requires entrants to write a fiction story that incorporates a colourful character, Detective WW Inkomba. (Inkomba means ‘clue’ in Zulu and Xhosa).

Word Warriors are required to produce a fun, fact-finding mission that draws readers in, and captivates them right up to the very last word.

All good detectives must be wondering what’s in it for them? Not only will their work be showcased on the Read website, the winner will receive a R1 000 cash prize, and their school will receive R5 000 worth of books.

Lizelle Langford, PR and fundraising manager at Read Educational Trust, said, “Together we can sharpen the literary skills of South Africa’s future leaders. A noble cause that is worth supporting every step of the way.”
