A call for volunteers to help victims of crime

RANDBURG – The police's trauma centre ensures the dignity and rights of victims are protected.

Randburg Police are encouraging volunteers to help victims of violent and social crimes at the police’s trauma centre.

The trauma centre provides help for victims of violence, such as trauma counselling, psychosocial support, health care, police services, legal assistance and shelter services.
Sergeant Dipuo Maphanga said, “We need volunteers to assist us in a rewarding experience in debriefing victims of crime at the centre.”

The police are looking for community members who are either qualified in psychology or counselling, or students within the relevant fields who are looking to gather community service experience.

Maphanga added, “It should be noted that this is volunteer work – it is not for pay.”

According to a press statement on their website, the South African Police Service is responsible for ensuring that the victims of crime, especially sexual offences and other serious and violent crimes, are provided with a victim-friendly service.

The trauma centre provides a service where the dignity and rights of victims are protected, and the victim is empowered and not subjected to secondary victimisation.
