UPDATE: Police hunt for Cresta robbery suspects

CRESTA – Police appeal to the community to come forward with information on the Cresta robbery.

Officers of Linden Police Station are still on the hunt for three suspects who escaped after a robbery at Cresta Shopping Centre on 15 May.

This after six suspects entered Totalsports pretending to be customers and robbed the staff at gunpoint. No shoppers or employees were hurt.

Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said when making their getaway, the suspects were immediately pursued by centre security staff after being alerted to the incident.

A chase ensued and the suspects ran towards the closest exit. Two suspects carrying a black bag with stolen cell phones made their way onto Beyers Naude Drive where they were apprehended by the security officers and detained for further questioning at Linden Police Station.

Two suspects made their way onto Mountainview Road where a shootout ensued between the suspects and the security officers.

One suspect was shot in the leg and taken to Helen Joseph Hospital where he is under police guard. The other suspect managed to flee the scene.

Cresta general manager Virginia Bester said they were grateful for the speedy response of the security officers.

“Security and safety are a priority for Cresta management and our security teams. We will continue our efforts to make the centre a safe environment where our tenants and shoppers feel safe.”
