The show has been adapted from the original screenplay from the film La La Land, and explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

Rand Park High Principal Alan Wilke said, “Our pupils have been working long and hard for many months to put this show together, and although they may be anxious and excited, this show is going to be a huge success.”

The musical tells the story of Mia Dolan, an aspiring actress who works in a coffee shop in a Hollywood studio, and Sebastian Wilder, a jazz musician who dreams of opening his own jazz club. Both are struggling to make ends meet while pursuing their dreams in Los Angeles, a city know for breaking hearts and dreams.

“The City of Stars is filled with dynamic students who love dance, drama, music, and so much more”.

The show includes the familiar tunes from hit musicals and films such as The Greatest Showman and Trolls, as well as a selection of popular music from artists such as Taylor Swift.

Acrobatic dance displays introduce the City of Stars performance.

“Today helped to show students who may be joining us next year, a little bit of what high school is like. This is just one aspect of the many cultural and sport extra murals that we have on offer. The main purpose of today was to show our future students that high school is the next great adventure in their lives, and how fun it can be.

“I would like a give a huge word of thanks to all the visiting principals and teachers for allowing their children to come and view the show.”

Excited children of Weltevreden Park Primary wait for the show to start at Rand Park High.

The City of Stars production takes place from 17 to 19 May at Rand Park High School. Tickets cost R50, and the public is welcome to attend.
