Texting and driving will land motorists in jail

JOBURG – Motorists warned by Metro police to obey the rules of the road.

The Metro police have warned drivers to obey the rules of the road or they will pay a hefty price for breaking them.

Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said vehicles that are not roadworthy will be impounded immediately and officers will check for valid driver’s licences as well as vehicle licence disks.

“We also look for vehicle defects and each defect found will have a corresponding fine,” said Minnaar. “For drunk drivers, they will blow a breathalyser test and give blood samples before being locked up. Motorists who drive 20km over the speed limit will also be arrested without question.”

Motorists are also warned not to overload their vehicles as this puts pressure on tyres and brakes.

All passengers must wear seatbelts and non-compliance will carry a fine of R250, while motorists who text and drive will face a fine of R500.
