Talented Unika athlete makes it to Southerns

ROBINDALE – Hockey girl in Southern Gauteng team

Helen Wilson recently became the first Laerskool Unika pupil to make it into the Southern Gauteng Hockey team.

The talented player has been in love with hockey since Grade 1 and her school coach had already seen enough of her talent to recommend her to join a local club.

“I started playing school hockey in Grade 1 and then we had a hockey clinic and one of the coaches told my parents I had talent,” said Helen.

“The following year I joined Shumbas Hockey Club and what I enjoy the most is the practice session and training for various tournaments.

I also enjoy the physical nature of hockey quite a bit, such moving around and never being still, and it also gives me the chance to meet new people. Hockey also helps me to keep physically fit.”

Last year, Helen’s U13 Shumbas team finished in the top two in the league and was promoted to play in the U15 league where she gained enormous experience.

Helen is not only a talent on the hockey field, she also cycles and is a gymnast at Visions Gymnastics. However, she dreams of playing for the national team and her current goal is to make it into the junior hockey national team.

“I really want to play for the junior South African team and I have five years to work my way towards that goal. It will need me to be fully committed but with high school around the corner, I am not sure how it will pan out.

“All the sports I take part in require a lot of effort but I enjoy every minute of it. I love cycling along the field and chatting with fellow cyclists. I enjoy the intensity of gymnastics and the attention to detail which is required to execute a move perfectly and the practice until it’s perfect.”
